Charred timber is natural wood that has been carefully burned under controlled conditions to create a protective carbon layer on its surface.

Originating from the traditional Japanese technique known as Yakisugi (sometimes referred to as Shou Sugi Ban), the process enhances the timber’s durability while giving it a distinctive appearance. The result is a long-lasting, low-maintenance material that is widely used for external cladding, façades, decking, fencing and other architectural features.

Charred wood is well suited for ventilated facades, decking, decorative partitions, fences, gates and exterior accents. For outdoor use, longevity depends heavily on correct detailing: ventilation, proper fasteners and avoiding areas where water can sit on the surface.

Indoors, charred wood is often used for feature walls.

Yes. For cladding applications, charred timber trims and other profiles are available to match your colour choice. This is generally a key consideration for items such as door and window reveals.

YakiWood can be installed using conventional fixing systems. For cladding in particular, we recommend using colour matching or contrasting stainless steel screws. We currently don’t provide these but on enquiry we will advise you of preferred suppliers.

For decking and fencing applications, often customers are happy to have discreetly applied nail or screw fixings, which can either be used through the face of the boards, or using a ‘blind fix’ method through the board edge.

Yes, although we suggest it should be regarded as ‘little to no maintenance’ and considerably less than many conventional timber finishes.

Charred timber requires only periodic inspection and gentle rinse to remove dirt and debris. Depending on the finish, timber species and level of exposure to the weather, some products may benefit from occasional maintenance oiling to preserve their appearance, while others are designed to weather naturally over time. Following the recommended installation and maintenance guidance will help maximise the lifespan and performance of the timber.

The traditional charring process creates a naturally durable, weather-resistant finish that requires no additional protective coating. It performs brilliantly withstanding rain, moisture, UV exposure, frost and snow. Ultimately it will deliver decades of performance when properly installed.

Natural colour changes over time are an expected characteristic rather than a defect. Simple cleaning helps preserve its appearance and water repellency, with no need for sanding. Potentially if required, light re-oiling can be undertaken although this isn’t necessarily needed.

When properly manufactured, installed and maintained, charred timber can last for several decades. Its lifespan depends on factors such as the timber species, the level of charring, the quality of installation and the environmental conditions.

With appropriate design and care, high-quality charred timber cladding can provide a durable, attractive exterior finish for 50 years or more.

Yes! We recommend ordering samples before making a larger purchase, as they allow you to physically see the colour, texture and finish of the charred timber.

Samples are available for most of our product ranges and are an excellent way to compare options and ensure you select the right timber for your project.

Typical facade board widths are 95mm, 120mm and 145 mm, with lengths of between 3m and 6m (depending on the selected profile and wood species).

Exact dimensions depend on your profile choice and project requirements, with custom options also possible.

Delivery times vary depending on the product, quantity and current stock availability.

Many standard products can be dispatched within a few working days, while made-to-order or larger project orders may require additional lead time.

An estimated delivery date will be provided when you place your order and we’ll keep you informed throughout the process.

Cladding boards are most commonly installed as a ventilated facade on battens/framing, leaving an air gap to help moisture evaporate.

The use of stainless steel fasteners, following the recommended expansion gaps, and installing with correct water run-off detailing. It’s also a good idea to protect end-grain and cut edges (e.g., with oil/sealer, depending on the system).

Before installation, store boards in a dry, ventilated area and pre-drill fastener points when needed to reduce the risk of splitting.

We supply premium charred timber products but do not currently offer an installation service.

However, we can recommend best practice installation methods and provide technical guidance to help your contractor achieve the best results.

Yes. Charred timber can perform exceptionally well in coastal environments when the correct timber species, finish and fixing system are selected. The protective charred surface helps improve resistance to moisture and weathering, while naturally durable species offer additional longevity.
